This Name Game Has an Edge

WHEN Joshua Sahara was president of the gay and lesbian student group at New York Medical College, he had ambitious plans for this school year: organizing a Minorities' Disparities in Health Care conference, starting a mentoring program at a gay and lesbian high school in the city and shadowing doctors at a clinic for sexually transmitted diseases.

Then, two months after the semester began, Mr. Sahara was told the club could no longer function. The administration at the college, which is affiliated with the Archdiocese of New York, said Mr. Sahara's organization would be ''promoting a homosexual lifestyle'' and was in conflict with the Roman Catholic Church.

Mr. Sahara is fighting that decision and says the college's decision condones implicit discrimination against gay and lesbians.

''This was supposed to be about educating students on a patient population they are going to have to work with,'' Mr. Sahara said. ''There are issues that have to be addressed among the student body.''

For the last several years, a group catering to gay and lesbian students operated under the name Student Support Group and had a handful of members, said Mr. Sahara, a second-year student. The group lobbied administrators last year to add sexual orientation to its nondiscrimination clause.

This fall, Mr. Sahara decided it was time to alter the group's identity as well and changed its name to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People in Medicine.

College officials say the Student Support Group was not a gay organization, but was meant to focus on issues with relationships, raising a family and sexuality. The proposal for financing for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People in Medicine group was for a new organization that could not be approved, the officials say.

''Although the mission statement of the proposed organization implied that the organization would be involved in advocating for better health care for G.L.B.T. people, it was clear that the organization and its leader would advocate and promote behaviors inconsistent with the values of N.Y.M.C.,'' Provost Ralph A. O'Connell said in a written statement. ''The organization also planned activities that would intrude on the privacy of students and faculty. N.Y.M.C. believes that all students, faculty and employees have the right to preserve their privacy in strictly personal areas, including their sexuality.''

Soon after he submitted the proposal, Mr. Sahara said, he was told the group should not set up a table at the annual student activities fair, where clubs typically recruit members. Mr. Sahara said he agreed because he thought that compromising would gain more respect from administrators.

Instead, Mr. Sahara said, it was only the first compromise. College officials told the group it could organize without any reference to gays or lesbians in its name, he said.

''It's as if they marginalize us, we will go away,'' Mr. Sahara said. ''It's not as if this is some radical proposal that has never been done anywhere before. We just want the same recognition as everyone else.''

Other Catholic schools, like St. Louis University and Loyola University in Chicago, have similar groups for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students. There are several other interest groups on the Valhalla campus, including coalitions for women, African Americans and Latinos in medicine.
