Texts warn of rogue sex clubs

Friday, 31 August 2007 A hi-tech messaging scheme was launched today to warn people in Soho of rogue bars where they risk being robbed and beaten up.

Westminster City Council­ is using Bluetooth technology to send text messages to mobile phones in a 30-metre radius­ of three particular­ venues which read: “£5 to get in, £500 to get out. Criminals­ operate some of the hostess­ bars in Soho. Don’t enter without knowing what you’ll get for your money.”

Customers visit the bars with the false promise of adult entertainment, but then get vast bills for drinks which can run into hundreds of pounds. Those who refuse to pay risk being frog-marched to ATM machines and forced to withdraw cash.

The scheme will issue 500 to 1,000 messages a day. Councillor Audrey Lewis, who has fought a long campaign­ to have the clip bars closed down, said: “By employing the latest technology and having a warning message sent to mobile­ phones advising people not to enter these sleazy and illegal­ clubs, we hope to thwart their activities.”

The campaign will target Twilights on Rupert Street, and Illusions and Le Soho Cabaret on Great Windmill­ Street. Passers-by will be asked first via their phones or palmtop computers if they want to receive­ the Bluetooth warning message before it is shown in full.

In recent years, the Met has closed several clip joints but struggles to get evidence because embarrassed or intimidated­ punters rarely make formal complaints. In the past year, there have been 41 reported incidents of crime from the hostess bars.
