Gay Rights in Egypt

Last week, four suspected HIV-positive men were arrested in Egypt, chained to beds and forced to undergo HIV tests without consent. according to rights advocacy group Human Rights Watch (HRW), „forensic anal examinations“ were also performed on the men to prove that they had engaged in anal sex.

The arrests are the latest in what HRW calls a „crackdown that endangers public health and violates basic human rights“ in Egypt. Twelve suspected HIV-positive men have been arrested and detained since October 2007.

„These cases show Egyptian police acting on the dangerous belief that HIV is not a condition to be treated but a crime to be punished,“ Gasser Abdel-Razek, HRW's acting director of regional relations in the Middle East, told the BBC.
